IDYLLWILD, California – After rescue teams reacted to reports of injuries, two rock climbers, including former NFL star Gavin Escobar, were discovered dead close to a Southern California mountain, according to police.

Following a distress call, rescuers were dispatched to Tahquitz Rock in Idyllwild at 12:30 on Wednesday, the Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department said on Twitter.

Both of the unnamed climbers were discovered dead at the spot after a crew succeeded in reaching the steep, inaccessible terrain.

On Thursday, they were named as Escobar, 31, and Chelsea Walsh, 33.

Early in the day, a little bit of rain fell in the region, but authorities did not immediately clarify whether the weather played a role in the fatalities

According to the agency, Escobar joined the Long Beach Firea Department in February.

Escobar, a San Diego State tight end selected in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft, formerly played for the Dallas Cowboys in a reserve capacity from 2013 to 2016. After brief stops with the Cleveland Browns, Miami Dolphins, Baltimore Ravens, Kansas City Chiefs, and other teams,

Escobar participated in 64 games throughout his NFL career, including seven starts. He also had 30 catches for 333 yards and eight touchdowns.
